            <p>Mr. Cruikshank dropped in and, though unwilling at first to autographize, I could not
              keep his hand off the page with your name &#8212; he had something he said so very <hi
                rend="underline">pat</hi> to come under it &#8212; when I told him that it was Dr.
              Raffles's Album,<anchor xml:id="a"/><note place="bottom" resp="#KG"> Dr. Thomas
                Raffles (1788-1863), an influential Congregationalist minister, originally from
                London but now long resident in Liverpool. See also, Hone's <ref
                  target="1829-11-06-toRaffles.html">letter to Raffles, 6 November, 1829</ref>. <ref
                  target="#a"> [return]</ref></note> he expressed some regret on not having seen
              him, to inquire after the family of Mr. Braddich of Liverpool and requested me to do
              so. I fear that I may not have that opportunity, owing to the length of my sale, and
              the fatigue of it during this very warm weather &#8212; which I beg you will mention
              as my apology to Dr. Raffles for not paying him that attention which his talents and
              reputation demand and command from every body, but the confused mind of a book
              auctioneer in the dog-days, after four hours hot work.</p>
