            <p> The alderman<anchor xml:id="a"/><note place="bottom" resp="#KG">The "alderman" is
                the celebratory turkey which Childs gave to Hone annually on the anniversary of his
                1817 trials. (See <ref target="1819-01-08-toChilds.html">Hone's letter to Childs, 8
                  January, 1819</ref>.) <ref target="#a">[return]</ref></note> arrived with his
              honours thick about him and he now reposes in the stomachs of <ref type="person">my
                Wife</ref>, Self, Eight young ones, <ref type="person">a friend from
                Dorsetshire</ref>, <ref type="person">old Joe Webb</ref>, &amp; <ref type="person"
                >my wife's Brother</ref>: and we have this moment drunk the health of him who sent
              him&#8212;all the young ones are now about me cracking nuts &amp; jokes and I am wishing
              you could see them and imagining that you are engaged in festivity of much the
                <milestone unit="folio" n="1v"/> same kind. I drop you this line (omitting to do so
              yesterday by the gentleman who took charge of the books for you for I had <ref
                type="person" target="whoswho.html#FryAlfred">friend Fry</ref> and another good
              fellow with me and I wished to know the day of the Fox dinner at Norwich before I
              wrote you, which I had not and opportunity of doing till I saw <ref type="person">Richard Taylor</ref>, who
              tells me it is <date when="1820-01-26">Monday the 26th January</date> on which day, having consulted my pillow
              thereon, I purpose to have the gratification of seeing you, according to your very
              kind intimation&#8212;but as to the how &amp; the "whereabout" I shall take your <milestone
                unit="folio" n="2r"/> opinion. I wish to see some of your good fellows. </p>

              <emph rend="underline">Business</emph><lb/><lb/> <ref type="publication">Oldham Inquest</ref> &#8212; out on Thursday
              next<lb/> <ref type="publication">Bentham's Panopticon</ref> &#8212; out of print<lb/> From <ref type="person">J. E. Taylor</ref> I have had a
              satisfactory letter<lb/> <ref type="publication">The Trials</ref>&#8212;curse 'em I wish they were done&#8212;they shall
              be&#8212;see an <ref type="publication" target="1819-12-25-toPress.html">Advt of mine</ref> (announcing the withdrawal of my letter to Copley) in the
              <ref type="publication">Chronicle</ref> [ye]sterday &amp; on Monday next<lb/><lb/>
              <emph rend="underline">End of business</emph>
            </p>
            <p> One of the greatest pleasures I expect is from seeing <ref type="person">Mr Edwards</ref><anchor xml:id="b"/><note place="bottom"
                resp="#KG"><ref target="../../bibliographical/secondary.html#bowden-diss-1975">Ann Bowden</ref> points out that this is a "shocker" for Mr. Edwards is likely
                George Edwards, a government agent and <foreign rend="italic">provocateur</foreign>
                who was at this time agitating among the radical community. Edwards was one of the
                figures behind the Cato Street Conspiracy of February 1820. <ref target="#b">[return]</ref></note>&#8212;but on a full
              stomach &amp; from a little strain of the head in writing a Carol this morning to go
              with the "moon"<anchor xml:id="c"/><note place="bottom" resp="#KG">i.e. <ref type="publication"><title>A Political Christmas
                  Carol</title></ref>, a seven stanza satirical parody that can be sung to the tune of
                "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"; the <title>Carol</title> was, as Hone notes,
                published along with <ref target="../../etexts/ManMoon/ManMoon-intro.html"
                    ><title>The Man in the Moon</title></ref>. <ref target="#c">[return]</ref></note> I am so miserably stupid that
              I cannot tell you more than that my wife desires her kindest respects to Mrs. C. as I
              do &amp; she requests me to tell you that <emph rend="underline">she</emph> will
                <milestone unit="folio" n="2v"/> take care to remind Mr. Fry to remind &amp;c.
