            <p> I did not receive your letter and the enclosures till my return to town or I should
              have earlier acknowledged the Receipt; I have not heard it suggested that you have any
              connection with the republication of this work, nor have any reason to doubt your
              assertions upon the subject;<anchor xml:id="a"/><note place="bottom" resp="#KG">In his earlier
                communications to Shepherd (e.g. the <ref target="1817-11-23-toShepherd.html">letter
                  of 23 November</ref>), Hone expressed surprise that the legal proceedings against
                him were going forward, and he wondered if the pirated editions (published by
                Richard Carlile and others) of the allegedly libellous parodies had been mistakenly
                attributed to himself.<ref target="#a">[return]</ref></note> I am obliged to you for the communications you have
              made. </p>
